planet b-boy at the drive in, by david s. danis

Picture yourself sitting in a chair, in an outside theater site filled with hundreds of people. A titanic screen ahead of you with a stage in front of it and flipping men competing for attention from the crowd. Soft rain pellets pinching your face.

My initial impression of Planet B-Boy (Directed by Benson Lee) before watching it was that it was going to be just another hip-hop themed dance movie. But it was not. It was so much more. Basically the film revolves around the art of b-boying, which means to dance “funky”. By this I mean dance from the heart and soul. The main protagonists were dance groups that came from all over the world, who wanted to battle in Germany. The beginning of the film focuses on the history of b-boying and then goes on to the different groups who want to settle the score.

The Cool Kids’ Hipster-Hop

The Cool Kids’ Hipster-Hop

Granted, there’s something undeniably unctuous about watching hipsters dance to hip-hop. And yes, there were least four moments during the opening acts on Saturday night when you could hear me yelling loudly to anyone who would listen that “white people killed hip-hop.” (Let’s just say there should be some sort of taxing entrance exam to be a white rapper.) But you can’t really blame artists for their fan base, except possibly Tool.

As for the the cool kids, the way in which they slap new packaging on old ideas may lack originality, but they put on a fun live set, one that reminded me how much I missed the old two MC’s and one DJ arrangement that used to be standard, but seems almost novelty these days (shouts also to Clean Guns). Lyrically, these guys are just okay, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt considering Mikey Rocks is just 19 years and figures to improve with age. Plus, in their 808 minimalism some of their beats are pretty great. My review’s up right now at the LA Times, so check it out if you’re into that sort of thing.

The Life and Times of Cool Dudes

During my 23 years of existence, I have come across several fellows who try to get attention by claiming to be ‘cool dudes’. Cool dudes (or “Kewl” Dudes) stand out from a crowd mostly because others don’t think they are cool.

Cool dudes are always found in crowds and can easily be identified by their uncanny ability to either push the limits of self control in other people or help them build the psychological stone wall.

Distinct Cool dude characteristics are as follows….

The Atheist

Ever come across a person in their early twenties claiming to be an atheist? If you have, you have just spotted a cool dude. These Cool Dudes are not atheists because they have made an in-depth research on the field of atheism but rather fancy themselves to be atheists because their life sucks in abysmal levels and they throw the blame on God. They just hate God for having given them their mundane life and very similar to kinder garden kids, they just ‘stop talking’ to God.

and now for some real estate:The Next Real Estate Boom: Prison Cells?

San Quentin State Prison
The exercise yard for the east unit of death row comes almost to the edge of San Francisco Bay at San Quentin State Prison in San Quentin, Calif. Some people think it would be a great place for private homes.

But if one California lawmaker has his way, the site of the state's oldest prison could one day be home to waterfront mansions and luxury condos with spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline.

In what might be called the worst real estate blunder in California's history, in 1851 San Quentin State Prison was built on a then-remote peninsula at the northern end of San Francisco Bay. Today, that 432-acre spit of land is surrounded by some of the area's best real estate with breathtaking views.
